A road mishap involving a tanker laden with petroleum product occurred on Saturday around Ezeuzu junction, close to Revenue House along Enugu-Onitsha Express way in Awka, causing panic among motorists and other road users.
Our correspondent reports that while speaking at the accident scene, the Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Andrew Kumapayi, revealed that the driver of the vehicle was fatigued from his night journey and could not manoeuvre the round-about which unfortunately led to the accident.
Mr. Kumapayi thanked God that no life was lost in the accident but three persons including the driver were injured and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The Chief Fire Officer of Anambra State Mr. Martins Agbili said men of the fire service quickly mobilized to the incident scene when they received a distress call and used a chemical foam compound to neutralize the spilled diesel content.
He emphasized that the road is prone to accidents due to its terrain.
A truck driver and a witness Mr. Chukwuneye Eneji said the driver of the Articulated Vehicle was on high speed before the accident occurred and added that the road is notorious for accidents.
They called on the state government to take urgent steps in stopping the recurring accidents by constructing a flyover on the road.
Uniformed personnel from the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corp and Fire Service were on hand to manage traffic.
