Prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Chief Emma Ejiofor, has issued a powerful message to President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people, urging them to honor the legacy of June 12 by protecting the country’s democratic institutions and processes.
In a statement marking the celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, Chief Ejiofor described June 12 as “a cornerstone of Nigerian democracy,” symbolizing the struggle for free and fair representation and the sacrifices made in pursuit of civil liberties.
“Let there be no doubt: June 12 is a cornerstone of Nigerian democracy. It represents the will of the people, a fight for true representation, and a sacrifice for the freedoms we cherish today,” Ejiofor stated.
Addressing President Tinubu directly, the APC stalwart emphasized the responsibility of the current administration to uphold democratic values and ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
“Mr. President, your administration must stand as a guardian of this legacy. That means upholding the integrity of our electoral processes, strengthening our institutions, and ensuring that every Nigerian voice is heard and respected,” he said.
Chief Ejiofor also called on citizens across the country to remain vigilant and actively engaged in the democratic process. He stressed that democracy is not merely a gift but a collective responsibility that requires constant participation and accountability.
“To the Nigerian people: Your vigilance is paramount. Democracy is not a passive gift but an active responsibility. Hold your leaders accountable, participate in the process, and never allow the spirit of June 12 to be extinguished,” he urged.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s ongoing challenges, Ejiofor expressed optimism in the resilience of the Nigerian people and encouraged continued dedication to democratic ideals.
“The challenges we face are real, but so too is our resilience. Let June 12 serve as a constant reminder that the power to shape Nigeria’s destiny lies within each of you. Stand firm in your commitment to democracy, and together, we will build a stronger, more just, and more prosperous nation,” he noted.
June 12 marks the anniversary of Nigeria’s historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history. The date was officially recognized as Democracy Day in 2018 to honor the democratic struggle and sacrifices of that era.
