The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports suggesting a possible replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing such claims as false and unfounded.
In a press statement issued in Abuja on Monday, January 26, 2026, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the growing media speculation was “purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless.”
According to the statement, the APC became concerned after recent reports went beyond general speculation to mention specific individuals as potential replacements for Vice President Shettima.
“Our Party states in categorical terms that the stories are purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless,” Morka said.
He urged media organisations to refrain from promoting unverified information and warned against giving attention to what he described as “rumour-peddlers and mischievous news sources” whose aim is to create confusion and discord in the political space.
Morka also reminded the public that political activities remain restricted under existing laws and electoral regulations, stressing that discussions about the 2027 elections are premature.
“At this time, our Party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he stated.
The APC said its priority remains the implementation of ongoing reforms aimed at transforming the economy, building prosperity, and improving the living standards of Nigerians.
The party further called on ministers, senior government officials, and party leaders to avoid actions or statements that could fuel unnecessary speculation.
“We call on our ministers, senior government and party officials to avoid, wittingly or unwittingly, stoking needless speculations, and to focus on their primary duty of diligent service,” the statement read.
Morka emphasized the need for party members and government officials to concentrate on strengthening the achievements of President Tinubu’s administration, describing the president as an “inimitable and visionary leader.”
The clarification comes amid increasing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties and stakeholders position themselves for future contests.
The APC’s leadership has, however, reiterated that its current focus remains on governance and policy implementation rather than electoral permutations.
