Unknown armed gunmen shot and killed three cattle herders late Thursday night along the Dorowa‑Jong Road in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, central Nigeria, local sources reported.
According to Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), the victims were returning home from a Qur’an study session in Dorowa community around 7:30 p.m. when they were ambushed. Security officials confirmed the fatal shooting and said authorities are investigating the incident.
Speaking to reporters in Jos on Friday, Babayo described the attack as brutal and condemned the violence, calling for justice and better protection for herders and rural communities in the region. He said the herders were shot before the attackers fled the scene.
Plateau State has experienced recurring violence tied to disputes over land, grazing routes and broader security challenges affecting Nigeria’s central belt.
This incident comes amid a wider surge in violent attacks in the country’s rural areas by various armed groups.
Local security forces, including officers from Operation Enduring Peace, visited the scene and pledged to conduct a thorough investigation to apprehend those responsible.
