Mobile policeman who was allegedly drunk has shot dead a Warrant Officer of the Nigerian Army who was the Chief Security Officer of the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba.
Trouble started when the policeman returned from a drinking spree and in the process, started shooting at random.
The Army Officer, Warrant officer Donatus Vrong was said to have warned him to stop the shooting.
Impeccable sources said he was in an uncontrollable state of stupor and was not ready to listen to the Army officer.
“The Warrant Officer actually warned him to stop the shooting spree but he refused. He then reported him to his direct Officer in Charge, who actually intervened and stopped him since it was night and it would send the wrong signals in the night.
“He temporarily stopped but when everyone left, he started again. The Warrant Officer still warned him to stop but instead of stopping, he just pointed the rifle at the Warrant Officer, fired and killed him.”
Immediately the sad incident happened, the Commissioner of Police, Abdu Umar directed the arrest of the culprit who was also disarmed and taken into custody.
As of the time of filing this report, the CP was said to have started a peace move by reaching out to the Army authorities to calm the obvious palpable tension that has developed between the two security agencies and to prevent soldiers from retaliating.
The theatre Commander, Major General Chris Musa equally confirmed the incident, adding that the CP had reached out to them to commiserate on the sad incident.
“He also visited HQ of the Theatre Command to commiserate with us and also brought a condolence letter with the promise that the mopol will be prosecuted accordingly.
“We are saddened by the loss but happy with the quick response of the Police because the Inspector General of Police has also called the Chief of the Army Staff to commiserate with him on the incident.
“Our troops understand the action was taken by an individual. He will be prosecuted accordingly,” the Theatre Commander said.
Meanwhile, the Borno State Police command has commenced the process for an orderly room procedure to dismiss the erring officer and prepare him for arraignment in court for murder.
