Multiple sources, including journalists and some staff of the office of the deputy governor of Edo state have confirmed that the National Sports Festival holding in Benin City, Edo state capital will be shutting down on Thursday, April 8, 2021
This is against the plan of the festival. Although this medium cannot confirm how many days the events were supposed to run, it was supposed to run for not less than two weeks to complete the circle of events.
But very unfortunately, the event will be ending abruptly on Thursday, according to Ebomhiana Musa, project manager, media and communications for the Edo 2020 festival
According to a statement he released late Wednesday night, the abrupt end of the event was due to lack of funds. He said the federal government has failed to redeem its pledge to support the festival. He added that the state has run short of its reserves
Tue statement reads thus:
The local organising committee, Edo2020 regrets to announce that it will end the games abruptly tomorrow, Thursday, April 8, 2021 for lack of funds.
“Rising from an emergency meeting this evening, the LOC says it has to take this hard decision due to lack of funds having expended its reserves to kick start the games.
“Regrettably, the FG is yet to redeem its pledge to support us as the host state financially for the cost of postponements. So, we are left with no option than to end the games at noon tomorrow.”
