BREAKING: Police detain 2 house of assembly members, and this is why

Two Lagos State House of Assembly members, Lanre Afinni and Sylvester Ogunkelu are facing police interrogation over their alleged involvement in the crisis surrounding the removal of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

According to reports, Ogunkelu has been detained, while Afinni was granted administrative bail on health grounds on Wednesday.

The Lagos Assembly has been embroiled in political tension since January 13, 2025, when Obasa was removed as Speaker and replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, while he was away in the United States.

Obasa rejected his removal, arguing that it did not follow due process. However, the majority of lawmakers upheld their decision, stating that any attempt to overturn it would be resisted.

The interrogation of Ogunkelu (representing Epe 2) and Afinni (representing Lagos Island Constituency 2) was due to allegations that they vandalized government property while retrieving the mace—the official symbol of authority—on the day of Obasa’s removal.

A source told Sahara Reporters: “On the day of Obasa’s removal, the Clerk of the House, Barrister Lekan Onafeko, was absent, and his office was locked.
