The local government area of Charles Soludo, the governor of Anambra state was on afternoon attacked by unknown gunmen. Soludo is from Aguata local government area of the state.
Emerald News reports that the secretariat was set on fire. It was also gathered that a vehicle was set on fire in front of the secretariat.
According to Politics Nigeria, shop owners and commuters scampered for safety as the unknown gunmen released gunfire.
Heavy gunshots were heard from around the secretariat’s complex, as no motorists can be seen going through the busy Orlu road, in Ekwulobia, Aguata LGA.
There were no firefighters in sight as at the time of filing this report.
Thursday’s attack in Anambra is the latest violence in the southeast region where separatist violence is on the rise.
The region has seen a surge in bloodshed, with more than 130 police and other security personnel killed by gunmen since 2021, according to local media tallies.
Authorities have blamed attacks on either the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement, which is campaigning for a separate state for the ethnic Igbo people, or its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The group has denied responsibility for the violence
