Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has strongly condemned the violent assault on a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Edema Jennifer Elohor, by operatives of a vigilante group in Anambra State.
The incident, which occurred in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, has sparked outrage after a viral video showed members of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, invading a corps members’ lodge. Despite the victims presenting valid NYSC identification, the vigilantes allegedly descended on them.
Miss Elohor was reportedly stripped naked, severely beaten, left bleeding, and subjected to degrading threats.
Describing the act as “inhuman and barbaric,” Senator Dafinone said the incident was not only a violation of the victim’s dignity but also an affront to the ideals of national service.
“No Nigerian citizen, much less a young lady serving her fatherland, should ever be subjected to such dehumanising treatment,” the lawmaker declared.
He called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators by security authorities, warning that failure to act would embolden further abuse by unregulated vigilante groups.
Dafinone also urged the Anambra State Government to take responsibility by compensating Miss Elohor for the physical, emotional, and psychological trauma she endured.
“The state must act to restore her dignity and send a clear message that such lawlessness will not be tolerated,” he stated.
The senator further appealed to the leadership of the NYSC to prioritize the safety of corps members serving in Anambra and across the country, stressing that parents must be assured of their children’s protection while in service.
He described the attack as a test of Nigeria’s resolve against impunity and called for reforms to regulate the activities of vigilante groups nationwide.
