Delta state commissioner for environment, Mr. Jamani Tommy Ejiro, has called on Deltans to conserve environmental resources in order to achieve the environmental sustainability program of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta state.
The commissioner made the call while delivering an opening remark on the celebration of the World Environment Day at the Delta state secretariat on Wednesday.
He said the gift and blessings which nature bestowed on the earth are priceless, hence, “it is essential for us to conserve them for a better future.
To this end, Mr. Jamani encouraged everyone to plant trees on their environment for the ambience it provides and the vitamins it supplies to the body.
He said June 5 is a day set aside by the United Nations every year to create awareness for citizens on the need to maintain healthy and restore the beauty of the environment.
He said: “We are telling the public that they should restore their environment. Our human activities have caused us the climate change we are experiencing today. We must therefore engage on tree planting as a means of restoring the sanctity of our environment.”
As a demonstration of his appeal to Deltans, the commissioner, accompanied by members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and members of staff, planted a number of trees along Mariam Babangida Way, Off Okpanam Road, Asaba Delta state.
Permanent secretary of the ministry, Dr. Minnie Oseji, in her welcome address, said the 2024 world Environment Day was celebrated in collaboration with Midwestern oil, seplat, Delta Ecosystem Restoration Initiative, and Chief Festus Ochonogor with the theme: Our Land Our Future.”
