Permanent secretary of the Delta state ministry of environment, Dr. Mrs. Minnie Oseji has said that parks are essential environmental, aesthetic and recreational benefits to cities.
Dr. Mrs. Oseji said parks play essential roles in preserving natural resources and wildlife habitats, protecting clean water and clean air and providing open space for current and future generations.
The permanent secretary made the remark in a welcome address during the unveiling of a park bench and planting of trees in the permanent secretaries quarters on July 29, 2024.
Oseji noted that parks give community members a safe location to gather and play, noting that by having a safe place for their kids, parents may be more likely to let their children outside in physical activities.
The permanent secretary insisted that the ministry is committed to the creation of green spaces in Delta state by the establishment and maintenance of public botanical gardens and parks.
She said the park facilities would include playground, shade over the playground, picnic tables, picnic benches, rubbish bins, water features and trees.
Representative of the ministry of works, Architect Okwuoma Melewe, said the project has strongly established the fact that the ministry of Environment has lived up to its expectations.
He said the green areas and trees in environments cannot be over emphasized due to its benefits to human existence in the provision of energy and absorption of carbondioxide from built up areas.
Highlight of the event was the planting of trees by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Dr. Mrs. Minnie Oseji.
