The Delta State Police Command has arrested two suspected notorious armed robbers alleged to be part of a syndicate that specialises in attacking churches and carting away musical instruments and other valuables.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspects were apprehended on September 16 following intelligence received about a planned attack on Dominican City Church along Polytechnic Road by Sticals Hotel, Ogwashi-Uku.
Operatives from the Ogwashi-Uku Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Israel Okomoyon, in collaboration with local vigilantes, swiftly mobilised and intercepted a gold-coloured Toyota Sienna Space Van with registration number EFR-150-XB. The two occupants were identified as Emmanuel Emiowor (21) and Noah Philip (20), both residents of PTI Road, Warri.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of dangerous weapons including one pump-action gun, three single-barrel locally made guns, a locally fabricated revolver, one live cartridge, and an iron rod allegedly used for breaking into church premises.
According to the police, the suspects confessed to being members of a gang notorious for targeting churches at night. Some stolen church properties have already been recovered. The police said investigations are ongoing to track other members of the syndicate.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to rid Delta State of criminal elements, warning that the state would not be allowed to become a safe haven for crime. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the emergency line 08036684974 or at the nearest police station.
