The Rector of Delta state polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku, Professor Emmanuel Achuenu, has reacted to the “no bra no entry” report which recently went viral on the social media.
In a recent media roundtable with journalists at the polytechnic conference room, the Rector said the polytechnic detests indecent dressing in all its ramifications.
He told the media crew that what happened was not necessarily about no bra, no pant, it was actually a signal to students to dress well and appear as disciplined students of the polytechnic.
Professor Achuenu said the decision was made by the leadership of the Students Union Government (SUG) and not management of the institution.
According to him, the SUG leadership felt their members were not dressing well to school and there was need to curtail their excesses. He said the union leaders blocked the school gate and barred the indecently dressed students from gaining access into the school.
He said one does not need millions of naira to dress well, saying students should not be naked on campus. He insisted that nakedness would not be condoned on the campus as morality is preached to its highest level.
The rector who was flanked by some members of management such as deputy rector, registrar and bursar, said the institution is establishing its feet on technology as it trains students on more of practical technology programmes.
The Rector said his area of practice is in physical development as a builder, hence he is seriously involved in infrastructural upgrade and development of the school.
He told the team of journalists that though there are some teething challenges as usual in every establishment, such as challenges of insecurity, BEDC challenge, fencing, he said the school is looking at options of partnering with individuals to combat some of these challenges.
He said though TETFUND promised to provide perimeter fencing for the school, the promise is still being expected to come to fruition.
Within his period of becoming the polytechnic rector, he said TETFUND has provided environmental faculty block which building will commence very soon.
He commended the Delta state government for having listening ear as the desires of the school are being addressed by the state government.
He said on his assumption of office as rector, there were issues of cultism but since he became rector the issue of cult clash has not been heard in the school.
On the issue of accreditation of courses, he said accreditation of courses is a key aspect of every institution. Hence, he said every course offered in the school has been accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
He said the most recently approved are Urban and Regional Planning and Estate Management which are some of the courses in Environmental Science and the school is to begin the programnes immediately.
The rector who said the school management has a robust relationship with students, staff and members of the host community, said educational institutions are service driven and not money spinning organisations.
Although he said getting necessary funding is a major challenge in running academic institutions, he said a lot of efforts were needed to get grants which is one of the major sources of funding for institutions of higher learning.
He also noted that there are N-power built centres in the school where about 49 applicants are already being trained.
The rector who took the journalists on tour of facilities in the school, took the team to the various ICT centres which are fully stocked with more than 2200 computers for CBT examinations.
Accompanied by the deputy rector and registrar, the rector said the ICT centres are fully equipped for JAMB CBT examinations. While in the ICT centres, the rector told Emerald News and other journalists that the ICT centre is in partnership with Microsoft where students are trained on Microsoft Certified Programmes.
He also said 50 students were currently being trained on CISCO programmes in the ICT centre.
Other centres visited were the engineering department showing specific machines for different purposes, some for plucking chicken feathers, extracting juice and others.
The team also visited the mass communication radio and television studios which are well equipped with standard broadcasting facilities. The team learnt that signals from the studio goes to as far as Asaba and Onitsha, the commercial nerve of Anambra state.
