Dowen College is located in Lekki, Lagos State, Nigeria and it has been in the news lately for very sad reasons. A student of the school, Sylvester Oromoni was allegedly tortured to his death by his fellow students for refusing to join secret cult.
Though investigations are still ongoing, the Lagos state government has shut down the school indefinitely following public outrage over the incident.
Further investigations revealed that Dowen college is actually one of the most expensive secondary schools in Nigeria and tongues are already wagging that anyone who pays such huge amount of money to get into a school should not just get quality education but unquestionable protection.
This school comprises boarding and day options. The fees are about two million naira (N2,000,000) per annum for a boarding student and one million, two hundred and fifty-thousand naira (N1,250,000), for day students, according to reports. The tuition fees include feeding, school uniform, house wear, and textbooks.
This implies that late Sylvester Omoroni paid about N2million per year before his life was cut short in strange circumstances in the school.
Dowen College was founded in 1997 with good facilities to offer broad and balanced education within a friendly, caring and happy environment. The school also provides a well equipped library, computer centre, internet connectivity, cultural facilities, football pitch, swimming pool and many more. This is why it is among the most expensive secondary schools in the country. But the school never bargained to be in the eye of the storm today.
