Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in a solemn ceremony attended by national leaders, dignitaries, and mourners from across the country. The burial was conducted with full military and state honours.
Following Islamic funeral rites, the Janazah (prayer for the dead) was held at a nearby makeshift prayer ground before Buhari’s remains were interred in the courtyard of his private residence.
The former president’s body, draped in the Nigerian flag, was borne to the graveside by military pallbearers. Soldiers stood in solemn formation, offering a final salute, as a military band played a respectful dirge, followed by ceremonial gun salutes in tribute to the late leader.
The atmosphere was one of deep reflection as Nigerians paid their final respects to a statesman who held office both as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and later as a democratically elected president (2015–2023).
Earlier in the day, Buhari’s remains arrived from London at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, where they were received by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, and other senior government officials. His body was then transported to Daura under tight security for the final rites.
