Government Model Secondary School weekend claimed the top spot in the Senior and Junior Secondary School categories of the Oshimili South State Constituency 2024 quiz competition.
The event, organized by Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, a member representing Oshimili South in the Delta State House of Assembly, was held in partnership with the Delta State government at the Main Auditorium of Dennis Osadebe University, Anwai, Asaba.
The competition, aimed at fostering intellectual growth and academic excellence among students in public schools, brought together participants from primary, junior, and senior secondary schools across the constituency.
In her opening speech, Hon. Anyafulu emphasized the importance of building the capacity of students in public schools to compete globally.
“This quiz competition strengthens the knowledge of our young ones and ensures they are prepared to face the world confidently,” she said. Using World Trade Organization’s Director General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as an example, Hon. Anyafulu inspired the students, encouraging them to aspire to greatness and excel beyond limits.
“The world is a global village where you can achieve greatness. If Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a proud Deltan, can lead on a global scale, you too can achieve even greater heights by following her example,” she added.
The Delta State Commissioner for Technical Education, Hon. Smart Ijeoma Ufor, reminded students of the competition’s purpose: to prepare them for the challenges of life. He urged them to remain diligent, saying, “The effort you put in today will shape your future. Be good ambassadors for your families and communities.”
Representing the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu and her Special Assistant, Mr. Mayor Ejiro, applauded the students’ enthusiasm and reminded them of Delta State’s commitment to education. He highlighted the state’s investment in tertiary institutions to accommodate the growing number of qualified students.
Hon. Ezenyili Kelvin Obi, Chairman of Oshimili South LGA, represented by his Vice Chairman, Hon. Chinye Uso Obobo, encouraged the students to remain steadfast and uphold the values of hard work and dedication.
Mrs. Djoma Emiliana, Chief Inspector of Education, Oshimili South, praised the students and teachers for their commitment to education. She noted that the competition fosters curiosity and creativity, making learning enjoyable while strengthening bonds among schools.
The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, lauded Hon. Anyafulu for her dedication to education. He, however, expressed concerns about the declining commitment to basic education, urging stakeholders to prioritize foundational education through initiatives like quizzes and debates. “Without a strong foundation in basic education, our tertiary institutions cannot thrive,” he stated.
