Special Assistant to Delta State governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Lady Diana Ereyitomi Eyo-Enoette, has called on media practitioners to use their medium to tell stories that highlight solutions, celebrate progress and hold authorities accountable.
Lady Eyo-Enoette believes that inspiring media narratives that proffer solutions to societal challenges will lead to changes in the way people live saying such narratives “will guide us towards a brighter future for everyone.”
She made the call during a media parley with journalists her office organized in collaboration with Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) and held at the conference room of the media organization.
She said media narratives are powerful tools that can amplify the stories of communities that are making progress in whatever field of human pursuits.
For her, there are stories of women-led enterprises in rural Delta, youths engaging in environmental conservation and communities adopting sustainable agricultural practices which the media could pick up and amplify their success stories.
She said good story telling “holds the power to inform, challenge, inspire and mobilise”, adding that such stories have “the ability to connect us, show us the face of the issues we care about and help us to understand the why behind what we do and the how of achieving meaningful change.”
Besides amplifying the success such individuals and communities are achieving, Lady Enoette said story telling also means confronting the hard truths – the gaps, the inequalities, the systemic barriers that must be addressed for sustainable progress.
To this end, she called for collaboration, innovation and a deep sense of respect for the diverse cultures and values, adding that through the media “we can build a sense of shared purpose and vision, one that transcends division and strengthens our collective resolve.”
General Manager of Delta Broadcasting Service, Mrs. Christine Emetulu, said the media parley was a strategic gathering aimed at uniting media representatives and influencers from both traditional media and digital platforms.
She said the parley was to empower the aforementioned media institutions to play pivotal roles not only in driving the SDGs but also the MORE Agenda of the Delta state government.
According to her, the collaboration underscores the resolve of the broadcast station’s outfit to give MDAs and the private sector the platform to showcase their activities and achievements.
Mrs. Emetulu also said besides holding leaders accountable, it also highlights the deliverables of government programs and projects as well as amplifying marginalised voices and inspire collective action for societal growth.
