Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has strongly denounced a recent violent incident targeting members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the unrest as an escalation of internal political tensions rather than an external attack.
In an official statement on Tuesday, Okpebholo expressed sympathy for those affected and reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace in the state.
He said it was regrettable that individuals allegedly brought in from outside the region had turned a peaceful political environment into a scene of unrest.
As Chief Security Officer of Edo State, the governor emphasised that his administration would not tolerate the importation of thuggery and miscreants under the pretext of political activity.
He stressed that the precise motive behind the assault was still unclear, but argued that the incident appeared to stem from disputes within the opposition party itself.
Okpebholo urged political groups to resolve internal disagreements before staging public events, warning that any attempt to incite violence under the cover of political engagement would be addressed firmly by state authorities.
He also appealed to residents to preserve peace and not allow the episode to tarnish Edo State’s long-held reputation as a peaceful region.
The governor called on security agencies to remain vigilant and monitor political gatherings closely to prevent further escalation, underscoring the importance of safeguarding lives and property in the lead-up to future political activities.
