Empowering young people with opportunities that fuel curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving remains essential for building a future-ready generation. Despite persistent gaps in learning resources and hands-on exposure, initiatives that blend science, experimentation, and innovation are helping students unlock their potential and envision solutions to real-world challenges.

The Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), a nonprofit dedicated to driving social, economic, and environmental impact in alignment with national and global sustainability goals, has taken a significant step in this direction.
The organization recently hosted the grand finale of its Igniting Minds Through Science (IMS) Exhibition—formally launching its first annual Science Project in Delta State. The programme was supported by Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd. (SEEPCO).
Held on November 26, 2025, at Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale, the competition brought together 11 secondary schools from Ndokwa East and Ndokwa West LGAs under the theme “Future Frontiers: STEM Innovations for Nation Building.”
Earlier in July 2025, VCDF organized an orientation programme for science teachers and principals from 34 public secondary schools across the two LGAs. Those teachers later cascaded the training to nearly 300 students. Eleven schools ultimately submitted project proposals and received funding to bring their concepts to life.
Describing the exhibition as “an innovative, first-of-its-kind initiative complementing the State Government’s MORE Agenda,” Mrs. Hope Igumbor, Director of Science Education at the Ministry of Secondary Education—representing the Commissioner for Basic Education—praised VCDF for its unwavering dedication to educational advancement.
Speaking on behalf of the winning team from Utagba-Ogbe Technical College, a student expressed gratitude for the exposure: “This competition provided a platform to showcase my abilities and gain meaningful experience. It has inspired me to think bigger and dream higher.”
Top accolades went to three standout projects:
First Place: Smart Extension Box – Utagba-Ogbe Technical College
Second Place: Flood Detection System – Abbi Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School
Third Place: Paper Ceiling – Girls’ Secondary School, Kwale
The event wrapped up with the presentation of certificates and consolation prizes to all participating students and schools, recognizing each institution as a winner. Cultural performances added colour to the celebration of science, innovation, and local heritage.
The IMS programme directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure). Through the support of SEEPCO, VCDF says it remains committed to empowering young minds, strengthening communities, and advancing innovation across Delta State and beyond.
