lsrael’s military has dismissed three generals and issued disciplinary measures against several other senior officers for their roles in the failures that preceded Hamas’s October 2023 assault, the deadliest attack in the country’s history.
The decision, announced Sunday, follows mounting public pressure for accountability and comes two weeks after Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir urged a “systemic investigation” into what went wrong.
The government has yet to establish a state commission of inquiry, despite repeated calls from families of victims and survivors.
Among those removed are three divisional commanders, including the officer who was serving as military intelligence chief at the time of the attack, according to Arab News.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said all three bore personal responsibility for the military’s inability to detect and prevent the Hamas assault launched from the Gaza Strip.
The military also announced disciplinary action against the heads of the navy and air force, as well as four additional generals and multiple senior officers.
The measures come after a committee of experts appointed by Zamir published its findings earlier this month, concluding that the October 7 failures stemmed from a “long-standing systemic and organizational” breakdown.
Investigators cited a significant intelligence lapse, noting that the military possessed “exceptional, high-quality information” but failed to recognize its significance or raise alarms.
The report also criticized flawed decision-making and inadequate deployment of forces during the overnight hours of the attack, pointing to failures across the chain of command.
