STORY DETAILS
In line with the mandate of the Delta state government to combat and prevent pests and vectors in flood prone areas, the commissioner for environment, Mr. Jamani Tommy Ejiro, weekend, flagged off fumigation of public facilities in the state.
The commissioner who led permanent secretary of the ministry, Dr. (Mrs) Minnie Oseji, directors and some staff members, flagged off the exercise in Ellu, a rural community in Isoko North local government area of the state.
According to the commissioner, the fumigation exercise is aimed at reducing the infestation, especially sanitation diseases that affect families and individuals.
He listed diseases that the fumigation is aimed at combatting to include cholera, lassa fever, and others.
In an interview with journalists at the Primary Health Centre, Ellu, the commissioner said: “Today marked the flag off of fumigation of communities in Delta South Senatorial district that are likely prone to flooding.
“The exercise will continue to other flood prone communities across Delta South Senatorial district of the state, including. Bomadi, Patani, Warri and others.
“Moreso, let me use this opportunity to inform Deltans, especially those living in low land areas to see the need to move to upland zones to avoid being caught with flood that could likely occur this year as predicted by NIMET.”
Other public facilities in the Ellu zone which were fumigated include primary and secondary schools and market in Obie Irri and Obrogo communities.
President general of Ellu, Humphrey Odhe, who received the commissioner and his entourage, expressed gratitude to the state government for taking the venture to fumigate the health centre in the community.
He said the exercise will, to a great extent, reduce disease outbreak in the area.
