Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has hailed the successful conclusion of the 9th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), which ended Saturday at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba.
The Games, which ran for 12 days, brought together young athletes from across Nigeria in what the governor described as a festival of resilience, diversity, and shared dreams for a greater tomorrow through sports.
Reflecting on the tournament, Governor Oborevwori noted that while Asaba 2025 showcased determination and talent, it also highlighted a disturbing trend threatening the integrity of the competition.
“The 9th edition has exposed a worrisome trend: the steady erosion of its credibility, as numerous states continue to field over-aged athletes across key events.
“I urge the National Sports Commission (NSC) to, as a matter of urgency, put measures in place to curb age cheating and restore fairness and credibility to the Games,” the Governor stated at the closing ceremony.
Despite this concern, Governor Oborevwori expressed satisfaction that the Games provided a platform for gifted and talented youths. He commended the host state’s athletes, as Team Delta finished second with 37 gold, 38 silver, and 39 bronze medals.
In his closing remarks, the Governor congratulated all participants, emphasizing that the Games go beyond medals to the unity and hope they inspire.
“Once again, congratulations — we are all winners,” Oborevwori said.
