Following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, new information has surfaced regarding the statutory benefits his family is entitled to under Nigerian law.
In accordance with Section 2 of the Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State (and Other Ancillary Matters) Act, the family of a deceased former Head of State is eligible for a series of financial allowances and privileges funded by the Federal Government.
Entitlements to Buhari’s Family
Below is a breakdown of the official provisions designated for the late President’s family:
1. Monthly Upkeep Allowance
The surviving spouse is entitled to a monthly allowance of ₦350,000, translating to ₦4.2 million annually, to support her personal upkeep.
2. Education and Family Support
An annual sum of ₦1 million, disbursed quarterly at ₦250,000, will be provided to cover the spouse’s upkeep and support the education of President Buhari’s children through university.
3. Healthcare
The family is entitled to free medical treatment abroad, fully funded by the Federal Government.
4. Annual Vacation
Each year, the family will receive a 30-day vacation, either within Nigeria or abroad, at public expense.
5. Official Residence
The Federal Government will provide a fully furnished five-bedroom residence at any location of the family’s choice.
6. Telecommunications Support
One direct telephone line will be provided to the family, with all associated costs covered by the government.
It is important to note that these entitlements apply solely to the widow of the deceased President and will be discontinued should she remarry.
