The Bolowei (Traditional Prime Minister) of Gbaramatu Kingdom and respected elder statesman of the Niger Delta, Chief Dr. Wellington Okirika, has praised Senator Ned Nwoko for his strong advocacy in favor of directly allocating the 13% derivation fund to oil-producing host communities.
Chief Okirika, widely known as “Mr. 13% Derivation Fund” for his long-standing commitment to equity for the Niger Delta, made the remarks during a visit to Senator Nwoko at both his residence and office.
The visit focused on issues surrounding the implementation of the constitutional provision that allocates 13% of oil revenues to host communities.
In a statement following the visit, Okirika, who is also the founding Executive Chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) and a co-founder of the Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas (HOSCON), said he had approached Senator Nwoko with confidence, believing in his capacity to champion the cause.
“You proved to me that you are a true leader by your actions against the deliberate acts of unpatriotism that have long oppressed the people of the Niger Delta,” he stated.
He went on to describe the Delta North senator as “one of the best leaders in Nigeria who hate oppression and is very vocal,” expressing hope that Nwoko’s legislative efforts would bring long-overdue justice to communities that have historically been marginalized despite producing the nation’s wealth.
Chief Okirika further noted that communities in the Delta Central and Delta South senatorial districts are closely watching Senator Nwoko’s work in the National Assembly and are encouraged by his unwavering dedication to issues of national and regional importance.
He also conveyed warm regards from the people of Gbaramatu Kingdom, home to prominent Niger Delta activist Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, underscoring the community’s support for the senator’s push for reform.
“We believe the governors will hear from you soon,” Okirika said. “And the Niger Delta will never forget your effort as you move the motion for a law mandating the direct payment of the 13% derivation fund to host communities, in line with the constitutional provisions of Section 162(2).”
Senator Nwoko’s advocacy marks a renewed push for transparency and justice in the management of oil revenues—an issue that has fueled decades of unrest and underdevelopment in the Niger Delta.
