Nigerians have unanimously rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochei, presidential media aide on social media, as commissioner representing Delta state on the board of the independent national electoral commission (INEC).
The decision of Nigerians is based on the fact that Onochei is a card carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, hence she is not fit to be a member of the independent INEC.
To the angry Nigerians, Onochei’s appointment into INEC negates the independence of the commission. It is believed that being a staunch supporter of the APC, she will be heavily biased in her decisions in issues that affect the opposition People’s Democratic Party PDP.
People who are supposed to be appointed into INEC are not to be members of any of the political parties, hence entrenching the independence of the electoral body. But appointing Lauretta Onochei, a die-hard critic of the PDP and full-blooded supporter of the APC falls short of independence of the INEC.
