Unknown assailants shot and killed an unidentified student at a secondary school inter- house in Ondo State on Thursday evening.
The incident occurred during Agolo High School’ s annual inter- house sports in Ikare- Akoko, the state’ s Akoko North East Local Government Area’ s headquarters.
During the shootout that rocked the gathering, two students were also alleged to have been hurt.
Before the shooting began, it was reported that the event began with excitement as students competed in 100m, 200m, 400m, volleyball, handball, table tennis, football, basket ball, and other sports peacefully before becoming bloody.
Secondary school kids from various sections of Akoko land attended the yearly sporting event, according to an eyewitness, with many old pupils also in attendance.
” The event was going on peacefully, the studet were happy and very excited to take part in diffrend activities. Suddenly, gunshots were heard, resulting in the immediate death of a student, while two others were critically injured but brought to the hospital, ” the eyewitness stated.
” After the unfortunate incident, there was panic and apprehension in Ikare Akoko as parents were running helter skelter to check the safety of their wards. Many students were missing and no one could tell where the gunshot was coming from” .
According to one of the teachers, this is the first time such an occurrence has occurred at Agolo High School.
” We have never seen such tragedy in this excellent school before, and we are asking the police to assist us in finding the perpetrators of this atrocity. ”
As of press time, neither the school district nor the state government had responded to the occurrence.
SP Olatujoye Akinwande, the Divisional Police Officer in Ikare Akoko, confirmed the occurrence, adding the deceased student’ s body had been deposited at a mortuary and those who had incurred injuries had been transported to a hospital for treatment.
