Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former Delta State Gubernatorial aspirant, Chief Sunny Onuesoke on Friday rejoiced with Delta State Governor, Rt (Hon) Sheriff Oborevwori as the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld his election as the duly elected Governor of the state.
Recall that the Supreme Court, on Friday, affirmed the election victory of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State.
In a unanimous decision, a five-member panel of the apex court dismissed an appeal the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, filed to challenge the outcome of the governorship election held in the state on March 18, 2023.
The court, in its lead judgement that was delivered by Justice Inyang Okoro, held that the appeal lacked merit.
It held that the APC and its candidate did not prove that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2023.
The court dismissed Omo-Agege’s contention that some of the result sheets that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, relied upon to declare Oborevwori as the winner of the election, did not have serial numbers.
According to the court, even if the total number of INEC forms that the appellants complained about are removed, it would still not affect the margin of lead that was in Oborevwori’s favour.
Reacting to the governor’s victory, Onuesoke who spoke to journalists by the sideline at the premises of the Supreme Court in Abuja after the judgment described the verdict of the Supreme Court as the ultimate triumph of the will of the people of Delta State as expressed at the polling units in their resolve to continue with the good work of PDP in the state.
He pointed out that the judgment of the Supreme Court has further restored the confidence Nigerians repose in the institution of the Judiciary and the hope for the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling in favour of our amiable Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori is a triumph for democracy and the people of Delta State. I rejoice with him and our party on this victory,” elated Onuesoke stated.
The PDP chieftain enjoined all Deltans, especially politicians to get down to the business of rebuilding Delta State with the final seal on the Oborevwori’s victory as affirmed by the Supreme Court judgment.
He maintained that what the Supreme Court did is not just to affirm the validity of Oborevwori’s mandate, but a call to duty.
“This is not a victory for Oborevwori alone or any political party. This is admonition for us to collectively work towards fixing Delta State for the betterment of the polity,” he stated.
He appealed to the aggrieved candidates to accept the outcome and work with Oborevwori for the interest of Deltans in particular and Nigeria in general.
