OPINION: Joan Onyemaechi’s kidnap and the disturbing silence

Tongues are wagging. People are speaking in hush tones. In little gatherings around the city corners, the discussion is on the kidnap of the amazon of Anioma land. But eight days after the deadly kidnap operations, there is dead silence everywhere.

From the security circles, there’s silence. From the state government and the People’s Democratic Party, there’s disturbing silence. Who will be the first to speak to Deltans on the whereabouts of the delectable Ada Anioma.

The kidnap operations led to the untimely death of two security officers. But one painful thing is that no one even cares about the security men who lost their lives in the course of protecting their subject. That is the supreme sacrifice of the police. And thereafter they are forgotten and gone forever.

The video that trended revealed that she was ferried in a boat through the River Niger up North. Though the video was brief and taken with shaky hands. As the boat moved up North, the car with which she was driven to the waterside was reportedly set ablaze with the yellow tongue of the flame welling up.

She was former on four grounds. She was former member of Delta state house of assembly. She was former member of the House of Representatives. She was former director general of Asaba capital territory development agency. And she was just recently former commissioner for technical education. So, she is a figure in the affairs of Delta state and even ring in the nation.

In her local government, Aniocha south council area, she held sway as the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Anywhere the political pendulum turns, from federal to the local government, Onyemaechi is a recognized personality.

But very unfortunately, for the past eight days, she has been out of circulation, whisked to unknown destination by unknown gunmen, after killing her security details, and the authorities of the state from all fronts are keeping sealed lips, maintaining the status quo.

According to The Pond News, for reason best known to the state government, no official statement about the unfortunate incident has been issued. The online news portal said “Despite the speculative report of THEWILL, a US based online platform of the death of Ada Anioma, the government is still silent.”

The Pond News also condemned the party chairman, Kingsley Esiso, for keeping mute as if things are well. The newspaper says: “On the part of the PDP, the party that produced Ada Anioma as state legislator, federal legislator respectively, the party chairman, Kingsley Esiso, has not condemned the incident or said anything about it.”

There are arguments in some quarters that her kidnap may not be unconnected with the unholy political environment in the state. Irrespective of the arguments from any quarter, the deafening silence from the authorities is disturbing.

However, it is believed that certain actions are ongoing. Investigations definitely are ongoing. The police must be carrying out descreet investigation. Nigerians and the people of Delta are praying that she returns to her home to tell her story and the journey to and from the den of lions.
