President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to religious liberty, emphasizing that the country remains a democracy guided by constitutional guarantees protecting the rights and freedoms of all faiths.
In an official statement released on Saturday, President Tinubu underscored that his administration has, since 2023, maintained active engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders across the country while addressing security challenges affecting Nigerians irrespective of their religious or regional backgrounds.
“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” the President stated.
He reaffirmed that religious freedom and tolerance form a core part of Nigeria’s identity and governance, adding that the nation “opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.”
Highlighting the government’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and mutual respect, Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s constitutional framework guarantees protection for citizens of all faiths.
“Our administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on protection of communities of all faiths,” he added.
The President’s remarks come amid ongoing global discussions about religious freedom and human rights, as Nigeria continues to strengthen partnerships aimed at promoting peace, unity, and inclusive national development.
