President of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), Comrade Dr. Prince Kehinde Taiga, has commended the Delta state commissioner of police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, for his success in crime fighting across Delta state.
Prince Taiga, in a telephone conversation with Emerald News on Thursday, said the police commissioner has proved his mettle in combating criminal activities in Delta just as he said the commissioner knows his job and does it well.
He said: “I want to commend the Delta state commissioner of police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, because he is doing well. With what I saw in his office the day I was there I can say he is doing a great job. I saw a lot of recoveries in his office.
“I was in his office when his boys brought four cultists and one girl and they recovered three cut to size pistols and other weapons. This shows that the CP is working in the state. The man is doing well. I want to commend him for his effort to reduce crime in the state.”
Taiga, a foremost human rights activist, also drew the attention of the inspector general of police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to some frivolous petitions against the Delta state commissioner of police.
He called on the IGP to discard the petitions saying they were written by criminally minded individuals who are heavily disturbed by the crime fighting prowess of Olufemi Abaniwonda. He said the aim of the petitioners is to discourage him from continuing in his good works.
“We want to appeal to the IG to encourage the CP. He should not listen to any frivolous petition against him from the pit of hell. Those committing crime in the state are the ones petitioning him when he is doing the right thing. The CP is doing well. I score him 85 percent,” Taiga stated.
However, Taiga called on the CP to deal with issues of extortion in the state. He told this online portal that there are complaints in the streets and roads of Delta state arising from extortions perpetuated by men of the police in the state.
He said: “From divisions and those along the roads, there are still reports of officers extorting people. The CP should warn them. Those arresting people because of insignificant mistakes in particulars should stop it. We urge the commissioner to deal with those people who are trying to damage his good works in the state.
“Police extortion is very high in Delta state. Somebody may be carrying a generator for repair and because he is not with receipt, he will be arrested. And money extorted from him. They look for all manner of faults from particulars.
“The CP should not allow the divisions and area commands to spoil his good image and intentions to fight crime and criminality. He should not consider tribalism in his action.”
