A US police officer identified as Ryan Remington has been fired from the police force after he shot and killed a suspected shoplifter in a wheelchair, hitting him nine times in the back and side.
It was gathered that the 61-year-old deceased named Richard Lee Richards visited Walmart supermarket and stole a toolbox.
In the video shared online, Remington who was called by Walmart employee is be seen meters behind him, asking him to stop.
He then opened fire at Mr. Richards when he refused to stop his motorized wheelchair. The police officer shot the suspected shoplifter 9 times in the back and the side.
Speaking about the sad incident, Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus told a press conference he was “deeply disturbed” by his officer’s actions.
He said;
“His use of deadly force in this incident is a clear violation of department policy and directly contradicts multiple aspects of our use of force and training.
“As a result, the department moved earlier today to terminate Officer Remington.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Remington’s attorney, Michael Storie said the video did not tell the whole story.
According to him, Mr. Remington “attempted to de-escalate the situation” but Mr. Richards’s actions left him “no choice but to use deadly force”.
