Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has called for calm and dialogue following reports of renewed tensions between the Itsekiri and Urhobo communities in Warri South Local Government Area.
The senator expressed deep concern over the escalating crisis, urging all parties to refrain from violence and embrace peaceful resolutions to preserve the longstanding cultural, social, and economic ties between the two groups.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, Senator Dafinone condemned the recent attack on the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) House in Okere-Urhobo, which reportedly left several Urhobo youths injured. Describing the UPU as a symbol of Urhobo heritage and identity, he labeled the attack as an affront to the entire Urhobo nation.
“An attack on the UPU is, by extension, an attack on the entire Urhobo Nation,” Dafinone stated, calling on authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure justice for those responsible.
The senator appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to act swiftly to de-escalate the situation and protect all communities involved.
He emphasized the need for neutrality and fairness in security operations, stressing that proactive measures prioritizing dialogue, trust-building, and reconciliation are essential to preventing further conflict. “The Urhobos of Warri, like all citizens, deserve protection from the Nigerian state,” he said.
Dafinone also urged traditional leaders, community elders, youth groups, and political stakeholders to work together to foster unity and mutual respect.
He highlighted the importance of concluding the Supreme Court-ordered delineation exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Warri Federal Constituency, noting that addressing longstanding grievances is critical to achieving lasting peace.
“Violence can only bring pain, destruction, and setbacks to our communities,” the senator warned, advocating for a future built on justice and harmony. He called on both the Urhobo and Itsekiri communities to honor their decades-long brotherhood and resolve disputes through dialogue, stating, “Peace remains priceless and irreplaceable.”
As tensions linger in Warri, Senator Dafinone’s plea for unity and restraint serves as a clarion call for all stakeholders to prioritize peace and collaboration to safeguard the region’s shared heritage and prosperity.
