Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has confirmed that he and members of his entourage were attacked by armed political thugs on Friday, October 3, 2025, while attending a wedding ceremony in Argungu, Kebbi State.
In an official statement issued on Saturday and signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami said the incident occurred shortly after the wedding fatiha of Hashim Ahmed Zakari and Aisha Abdullahi Tsamiya at Sabon Garin Kanta, Argungu.
According to Malami, the attackers appeared suddenly from different directions, wielding dangerous weapons and chanting provocative statements intended to incite violence.
“Without provocation, a group of thugs appeared from different directions, brandishing dangerous weapons and uttering inciting statements aimed at instigating chaos and violence,” Malami stated.
The former minister noted that he had taken deliberate steps to avoid confrontation during the event, including travelling with a minimal entourage and instructing his supporters not to respond to any provocation.
“These precautions, by divine mercy, prevented what could have been a tragic and disastrous outcome,” he added.
Malami condemned the attack, describing it as a reflection of the growing threat of political intolerance and thuggery in Nigeria. He called for urgent measures to address the menace, emphasizing that politics should not be turned into a platform for violence or intimidation.
The former Attorney-General assured his supporters and the general public that he would pursue justice through lawful and constitutional means, expressing confidence in Nigeria’s security agencies and judiciary to investigate the matter thoroughly.
“I have absolute confidence in our security agencies and the judiciary to investigate this matter thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.
He further urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, stressing his continued commitment to peace, justice, and democratic principles.
As of press time, security authorities in Kebbi State have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
