South African anti-apartheid icon Archbishop and theologian, Desmond Tutu, has died.
According to reports, he died on Sunday, December 26 at the age of 90.
Tutu was remembered for his tireless fight against injustices, his easy humour and his characteristic smile. He was known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist.
Paying tribute to the deceased, South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa wrote;
“The pa*sing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa.
“Desmond Tutu was a patriot without equal; a leader of principle and pragmatism who gave meaning to the biblical insight that faith without works is dead.
“A man of extraordinary intellect, integrity and invincibility against the forces of apartheid, he was also tender and vulnerable in his compa*sion for those who had suffered oppression, injustice and violence under apartheid, and oppressed and downtrodden people around the world.”
Following his death, many Mourners HAS gathered outside his former parish in Cape Town, St George’s Cathedral, while others ma*sed at his home.
