Northern Nigeria’s growing ambition to become a leading destination for equestrian sports took centre stage as the 12th National Horse Racing Derby concluded in Sokoto with more than ₦37 million in prize money, six vehicles, and a renewed commitment to build a racecourse capable of hosting world-class competitions.
The week-long championship attracted horse owners, jockeys and thousands of spectators from across Nigeria and neighbouring African countries, including Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Burkina Faso. The strong regional participation highlighted the event’s rising profile as one of West Africa’s biggest traditional horse racing festivals.
Competitors battled for honours in several prestigious categories, including the Sultan’s Cup, Governor’s Cup, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko Cup, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Cup and the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Cup. Winners received cash rewards, vehicles, trophies and other prizes, with organisers announcing a total prize pool exceeding ₦37 million.
Speaking at the closing ceremony on behalf of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, Deputy Governor Idris Muhammad Gobir described the successful hosting of the championship as another milestone for Sokoto State. He said the annual derby has evolved beyond a sporting event into a platform that promotes cultural heritage, strengthens national unity, encourages tourism and stimulates economic activities.
Gobir also revealed that the state government plans to upgrade the Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko International Race Course to international standards. According to him, the project is aimed at positioning Sokoto as a recognised destination for global equestrian competitions while creating new opportunities for tourism and investment.
The ceremony attracted several high-profile dignitaries, including Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Minister of Labour and Employment Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, Minister of State for Works Bello Muhammad Goronyo, members of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, traditional rulers and senior government officials.
Senator Wamakko described horse racing as a vital part of Sokoto’s cultural identity and called for sustained investment to preserve and modernise the sport. He expressed confidence that improved facilities would further elevate the state’s reputation within Africa’s equestrian community.
Vice President of the Sokoto Turf Club, Alhaji Dalha Sidi Mamman, praised sponsors, donors and stakeholders for supporting the championship. He said the derby continues to strengthen friendship, cultural exchange and cooperation among participants from Nigeria and other African countries.
Organisers believe the event is helping to establish Sokoto as one of West Africa’s leading centres for horse racing while showcasing Nigeria’s rich equestrian traditions to a broader international audience.
