The Nigerian government has approved new annual allowances for senior academic staff in the country’s public universities.
Under the new policy, full professors will receive an additional ₦1.8 million per year, while associate professors (known locally as “readers”) will receive ₦870,000 annually.
The benefit, officially referred to as a “professorial cadre allowance,” applies only to academics in the two highest academic ranks—professors and associate professors.
Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the decision in Abuja while presenting a newly renegotiated agreement between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the main body representing university lecturers.
According to the government, the new allowance is part of a wider effort to improve the working conditions and welfare of university lecturers following ongoing discussions with ASUU.
