Many people feign ignorance when it comes to discussing matters relating to sex with children. Some are of the view that the children are too young and fragile to understand sexual matters. From the family to the mainstream education platforms to religious bodies; this topic has been given little or no attention. Painfully, the spate of sexual violence all over the globe and in our locality is on the increase. If nothing is done about it, we might be on a journey of no return to a generation replete with wounded women. The tale would be unpalatable and unbearable.
The girl child and women are now endangered species. One begins to wonder the level of awareness among children. How do you respond to your children when they question you with sex related matters? Do you disregard them and tag them as being too inquisitive? For those who are enlightened on this matter, how do you school your girls? Do you charge them to stay away from men, not to allow any man touch them in certain places; scream for help when danger is perceived? It is obvious that it is the male specie that does the abuse. Can a girl child rape herself?
As a responsible father, have you been able to school your male children on sexual matters? How not to treat the female as slaves? How to protect the female from violence? Have you taught your male child that the need to develop the ability to maintain self-control even under pressure? Have you taught your male child that raping a girl has long lasting psychological, health, financial effect on the female and on future generation? Rape is inhumane and must be discouraged. The search light should be focused on schooling the male children on things they need to know concerning sexual issues.
In addition, as part of their social responsibilities, companies, cooperate bodies and others can produce and position bill boards in strategic places such as the markets, malls, religious environments, schools; both public and private. The constant sight of words discouraging rape with highlights on its potential damages may go a long way to curb the trend. Religious bodies should embark on rigorous campaign on the dangers of rape. As an adult, grab every opportunity you have to talk about sex with focus on rape. We all must play our parts to stop this monster. Say no to rape!!
