Castleview Primary School in Edinburgh, United Kingdom has requested for boys in its school as well as females from the age of three should start wearing skirts to promote equality.
In the email sent to parents from Castleview, the school noted that it wanted the children to be ‘comfortable’ taking part.
According to the school, trousers and leggings could be worn under the skirts if need be.
Castleview Primary went on to offer to provide skirts for some children in a situation where none were suitable at home. The emial suggests that Teachers can wear skirts too.
The school said pupils in P6, what might be compared to Year 6 in England, came up with the thought after hearing about the Spanish campaign.
Note that Spanish teachers and pupils including boys have worn skirts to show support to a boy who was expelled for wearing one last year.
In Spain, November 4 is now ‘wear a skirt to school day’.
The email sent reads in parts; “We want our school to be inclusive and promote equality.”
“We’re keen to spread the message that clothes don’t have a gender and that we should all be free to express ourselves as we choose.”
Meanwhile, ever since they received the message, any parents has been critcizing the school.
A woman named Megan whose son attend the school wrote via Twitter:
“My son is five and just got this from the school! Let kids be kids.”
A Twitter user named Nicola replied:
“If a boy wants to wear a skirt to school, he should be allowed, but why put pressure on people to ask their son to wear a skirt or be seen as some sort of bigot?”
