As the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori marks its second year in office, the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has applauded the progress made under the “MORE” Agenda while calling for more structured and inclusive media engagement.
In a press statement jointly signed by NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and Secretary, Comrade Victor Sorokwu, the Council reviewed the administration’s performance, highlighting significant milestones such as the implementation of the new minimum wage, prompt salary and pension payments, youth and women empowerment initiatives, and ongoing infrastructural development across Delta State.
“These achievements reflect commendable progress across key sectors,” the NUJ stated, praising Governor Oborevwori for meeting the expectations of Deltans and silencing critics who doubted his capacity to deliver.
However, the Council expressed dissatisfaction with the administration’s media relations, describing current efforts as “selective, inconsistent, and insufficiently structured.” While acknowledging the 100% increase in stipends to some journalists, the NUJ stressed that the move, though appreciated, falls short of the engagement needed in a democratic society.
Referencing Section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution, the Council reiterated the media’s role in holding public officers accountable and emphasized the necessity for regular, open communication between the government and journalists.
The statement compared the present situation with past administrations, which maintained quarterly press briefings and regular parley sessions. It lamented the current administration’s departure from that tradition, warning that continued neglect could harm public trust and historical perception of the government.
The NUJ clarified that its critique was not antagonistic but driven by a professional duty to promote democratic accountability.
“The Governor still has time and opportunity to recalibrate,” the statement said, urging His Excellency to institutionalise statewide press briefings, live media interactions, and inclusive engagement across all platforms.
Reaffirming its willingness to collaborate, the NUJ concluded by calling for a renewed commitment to transparency, openness, and mutual respect between the government and the media in Delta State.
