The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 52 suspects following the disruption of a protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, amid heightened security operations to curb rising criminal activities in the area.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, personally led a heavy security deployment in Ekpoma in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) and local hunters.
The operation was aimed at restoring public order and addressing issues of kidnapping and other criminal activities.
The police said investigations revealed that the peaceful protest was hijacked by suspected hoodlums who allegedly engaged in vandalism, looting, assault, rioting and other acts capable of undermining public safety. The 52 suspects were arrested in connection with the violence.
The statement further alleged that some of the suspects forcibly invaded the palace of the Enogie of Ekpoma, His Royal Highness Anthony Ehizogie Abumere, where they reportedly assaulted the traditional ruler and his wife and damaged property within the palace.
The Command dismissed claims on social media that peaceful protesters were arrested, insisting that only those involved in criminal acts were taken into custody.
It added that all the suspects have since been arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.
Reaffirming the police position, CP Agbonika said the Command respects the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful protest but will not tolerate violence, criminality or actions that threaten the rights and safety of law-abiding residents.
The Edo State Police Command urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on official sources for accurate information, while assuring residents of its commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.
