Monday Okpebholo, governor of Edo, has directed all newly sworn-in commissioners and special advisers to wear the ‘Asiwaju’ cap to cabinet meetings.
The cap is emblazoned with an insignia of President Bola Tinubu. Asiwaju, which loosely translates to forerunner in Yoruba, is the president’s sobriquet.
The governor warned that non-compliance would result in exclusion from executive sessions.
Speaking during the inauguration of new commissioners and members of various state commissions at the New Festival Hall in government house, on Tuesday, Okpebholo said Tinubu made his victory in the November 2024 election possible.
“If you are wearing a traditional dress and you come to the exco without an Asiwaju cap, you’re going back,” Okpebholo said.
The governor’s remarks, delivered amidst applause, have elicited backlash on social media, with many labelling the directive an “excessive display of political allegiance”
