Delta state government on Thursday confirmed that no fewer than 395 persons have been infected by the deadly Omicron, the fourth variant of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The state commissioner for health, Dr. Mordi Ononye, supported by his counterpart in information ministry, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, in Asaba, said that out of the 1,897 persons that were tested, 395 had contacted the virus.
He said although the state had not made vaccination compulsory, he decried the sharp drop in the observation of the prescribed COVID-19 protocols of constant hand-washing, use of alcohol sanitiser, keeping social distance and wearing of face mask.
He, however, lamented that during the first phase of the pandemic, 862 persons were infected, 791 contacted the virus during the second wave, while 1,498 and 395 were infected during the third and fourth waves respectively.
He added that over 65,554 tests had been carried out since the outbreak of the pandemic in the state.
According to him, out of this number, 21,724 tests were carried out during the the 2021.
He said: ‘’A lot of treatment is involved to recover from this unfortunate deadly disease.
Hence, “we are preaching as we are doing for citizens to take advantage of the pharmaceutical measures and other health practices.’’
