Elders and youths from Nembe kingdom in Nembe local government area of Bayelsa state have warned chieftains of the various political parties in the dtate to stop threatening electorates with violence ahead of the November 11 governorship election.
According to the elders and youths of Nembe kingdom (Ogbolomabiri and Bassambiri) under the aegis of Nembe-Se Congress, they urged the politicians to respect the rights of the electorates as enshrined in chapter 4 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The Nembe Se Congress, in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its President, Chief Ebiegberi Domo-Spiff, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies to ensure that there is a level playing ground for all candidates in the November 11th poll.
According to the Nembe Se Congress, “Similarly, the congress calls on all politicians and community leaders in Nembe Se to allow all the eligible voters to vote candidate of their choice. We also appeal to all Nembe people who are duly registered in their kingdom and communities ,and who have their voters cards to travel to their homes and exercise their franchise by electing their future political leaders.”
On the crisis in Nembe Bassambiri, the Nembe Se Congress expressed pain at the development, insisting that the congress is collectively and individually making frantic efforts to wade into the crisis to bring permanent peace to the community.
It said “while the congress continues in its effort to explore ways to restore peace in Nembe Basaambiri, we implore the good people of the community (Nembe Bassambiri) to relise that we are of a common ancestry and heritage, and that providence has brought us together as one indivisible people of Nembe extraction.
“Consequently, Congress appeals to the people of Nembe Bassambiri to bury the hatchet, give peace a chance and live as brothers and sisters as in the old times.”
The Nembe Se congress also called on its members at all levels in the Kingdom to continue the sensitization effort on the National Census which was supposed to be conducted by the National Population Commission in the First Quarter of 2023 but was postponed due to the change in leadership at the national levels.
Congress therefore implore everybody of Nembe Extraction in Nigeria and in diaspora to be ready to be counted whenever the exercise commences
