In a bid to reduce afforestation and to mitigate the impact of climate change in the environment, Nigerians have been advised to plant more trees in their environment.
The Permanent Secretary in the Delta State Ministry of Environment , Dr (Mrs) Minine Oseji, gave the advice during the planting of trees by the Ministry and Working Fingers in commemoration of her fifty five years birthday in Asaba Delta state.
Mininie said the exercise was essential for man’s survival and would help sustain the environment, hence more trees should be planted across the country.
According to her, it is also in compliance with the injunction given to Deltans by the Commissioner, Hon. Chris Onogba, to plant minimum of five trees in one’s life time.
She said the tree which represented the Ministry was in gratitude to God for her 55 years on earth.
She said planting trees for a healthier tomorrow called for planting of more trees.
Dedicating the tree plant, the founder, Working Fingers Initiative, Ambassador Eris Jewo-Ibi, said the Community based women led organisation, looks forward to a time when there would be gender equality with more women in leadership and an end to rape.
Jewo-Ibi said the exercise would help promote nature, culture, hence people should promote tree planting.
Speaking on the essence of tree planting, the Horticulturalist, Mr. Daniel Israel, said the tree planting makes our environment more conducive, adding that nature has a way of chasing out infection.
While highlighting the benefit of the trees planted, Israel charged the general public to endeavour to plant trees in their environment.
