The House of Representatives has approved the declaration of a state of emergency for Rivers State despite stiff opposition from stakeholders.
The House also approved the six-month suspension imposed on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the assembly via a voice vote on Thursday.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbass read the president’s letter during a plenary session on Thursday.
When put in a voice vote, the lawmakers overwhelmingly backed President Tinubu’s declaration, approving his decision.
According to Abbass, 240 lawmakers attended the session, meaning there was a quorum.
Many legal experts and opposition figures have argued that the Nigerian Constitution does not give the President the power to remove an elected governor.
Despite the approval from the House of Representatives, the decision remains a highly controversial issue and is expected to draw comments across the country.
