The President, Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), Dr Kehinde Prince Taiga has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State for the inclusion of youths in the list of his commissioner nominees.
Amidst high anticipation, the governor on Wednesday July 19, unveiled a list of 26 designate commissioners, which brought about excitement and jubilation among people of the state, especially his supporters.
Reacting to the list, Dr Taiga described Governor Oborevwori as a youth-friendly leader and thanked him for ensuring that the youths are well represented in his cabinet, noting that it is the first time any administration would be giving up to 30 per cent inclusion to youths in the state.
While assuring the governor that Delta youths would continue to support his administration, to ensure that he delivers on his campaign promises, Taiga appealed to him to also consider the youths in his subsequent appointments, as a way of reducing youth restiveness in the state.
He said, “I commend His Excellency for giving the youths up to 30 per cent inclusion in his appointments. It is a welcome development as this has never happened in Delta State before. I want to assure him that Urhobo youths and Delta youths in general, are solidly behind him.”
“I also appeal to him to consider giving the youtths more chances in his subsequent appointments. This will help to drastically reduce unemployment among the youths as well as prepare them to become better leaders in the future.”
Dr Taiga further extolled the governor for giving listening ear to the yearnings of youths of the state by including them in his cabinet, and prayed God to grant him the strength and wisdom to deliver the dividends of democracy to Deltans.
The CDHR President while congratulating the youths who have been appointed as commissioners, urged them not to misuse the opportunity given to them or disappoint the people, but to justify the confidence reposed in them.
According to him, “Those who have been appointed should see their appointment as an opportunity to serve. They should shun pride and work in synergy with others, to enable them perform the duties assigned to them effectively.”
While praying God to help the appointees succeed, he maintained that the future of youths in governance depends largely on the performance of those who have been appointed into public office today.
