Since this ugly incident about a 21 year old Chidinma Ojukwu who killed her man friend, Usifo Ataga, the CEO of Super TV emerged, many parents have been worried over the high level of social vices in society.
Our reporter who interviewed some parents in Asaba, Delta state, reports that prevalence of social vices have eaten deep into the fabrics of society.
Mrs. Deborah Utebor told Emerald News that most parents and guardians have failed to inculcate morals and discipline on their children and wards.
Mrs. Utebor stated that amongst the three agents of change which are family, school and church that it is the family that should influence the children the most.
She added that her reason was that if children are influenced from their tender age whether positively or negatively, it will be very difficult for them to change when they grow.
She noted. ” Most parents have failed to train their children well. Many of them cannot correct their children when they are going astray. Instead, they want their children’ s teachers to correct their children for them”.
According to her, most parents especially the wealthy ones always impress their children by providing everything they need, adding that when the children virtually get all their needs from their parents, they can do anything to have all they want when their parents cannot meet up with their needs again.
Also in her own contribution, Deacon Christopher Lekan told this meduim that many ministers of God have deviated from teaching holiness to their congregation.
Deacon Lakan noted that the church as an agent of change should teach holiness as well as telling them the consequences of sin, adding that it will help the children to have the fear of God.
He also faulted the abuse of social media which he said has contributed immensely to the decay of many children in society.
He urged parents to monitor how their children use social media so that there will be no more record of shameful cases of Chidimma in society.
Also in her opinion, Mrs. Clementine Kanu said that the high rate of sexual immorality amongst the children of nowadays is caused by many factors such as poor parental background, peer pressure, promiscuity on the side of men and women who these children look up to.
Mrs. Kanu regretted that many parents are living unholy lives which automatically influences their children as well.
She added that many parents are too busy to make fervent supplications for their children.
According to her, most of them go from one club to another, one function to another. ” So which time do they have to model their children”, Mrs. Kanu said.
Pastor Joshua Nwosu categorically faulted most parents for not being able to train their children in a godly way.
Pastor Nwosu added that parents should go back to the drawing board and use the word of God and effective prayers to control their children’ s character.
