The Anioma farmers association has revealed why they have chosen to throw their full support behind Prince Ned Nwoko, the Delta North People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate, in the forthcoming senatorial election.
During a meeting with Nwoko, on Sunday, 15 January, 2023, at Mount Ned, Idumuje Ugboko, the association lamented about the inability of the government to tackle issues that have been bedeviling farmers, not just in the region alone, but in Nigeria as a whole.
Mr Christopher Onyemaechi Awunor, the secretary general of the association, stated that, lack of government support for local farmers has continued to affect the quantity and quality of agricultural produce in the country, stressing that, a country that cannot feed its citizens from locally grown foods is not qualified to be called an independent country.
Speaking on the choice of their prefered senatorial candidate, Awunor said that, the association chose Nwoko because, they see him as a beacon of hope for the improvement of agriculture in Anioma.
“As farmers, we suffer a lot of relegation from the government. Ironically, agriculture is the bedrock of every succeeding nation. To be at our best, we need government’s support. Over the years, the people who represent us in government have not done as expected in providing arms for farmers to boost our production. They do not take our exigency seriously.
“However, having someone like Prince Ned Nwoko, whose ability and credibility have been tested during his time in the House of Representatives, vie for the senatorial position, is a development that brought so much hope to farmers in Anioma.
“Prince Ned, aside from politics is a very dogged person. He is known for taking every legal action possible to achieve what he wants. He is credible and very accessible. We are confident that when elected, he will address the challenges of farmers in Anioma. Hence, we have decided to give him our full support in this coming election. He is our choice.” Awunor said.
The association noted that, for the sake of Nwoko, whom dey lauded as one who honours his words, they will give their 100 percent votes to PDP, pointing out that, the party’s victory at all levels would make Nwoko’s work as a senator easier and more productive.
Addressing the group, Nwoko promised to make it possible for farmers to have access to loans with very minimal interest from financial institutions, as well as harness other ideas that would improve agricultural practice in Anioma, and by extention, Nigeria as a whole.
