The Delta State Government has officially announced the rollout of a new smart traffic enforcement system known as Plate Detect, an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, aimed at enhancing road safety, improving traffic management, and ensuring compliance with vehicle documentation laws across the state.
According to a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, the initiative, spearheaded by the Vehicle Inspection Department (VIO) under the Directorate of Transport, will take effect from Friday, November 14, 2025, beginning in Asaba and Warri, before expanding to other major cities in the state.
A Smarter Way to Enforce Traffic Rules
The Plate Detect solution leverages cutting-edge ANPR technology to automatically scan and detect number plates, flagging vehicles with expired or invalid documentation such as licenses, insurance, and roadworthiness certificates. It will also identify traffic violations including over-speeding and running red lights at monitored intersections.
“The Plate Detect solution is part of the government’s broader effort to promote road safety, help safeguard our communities, and improve traffic flow across the State,” said Agofure. “It is designed to support safer and more efficient transport by ensuring motorists comply with traffic and documentation regulations.”
Key Benefits for Motorists
With this technology, motorists and transport operators will be able to:
Easily track and verify the status of their vehicle documents;
Ensure timely renewal of expired documents;
Avoid confrontations with enforcement agents through seamless compliance;
Benefit from smoother traffic flow and fewer delays;
Contribute to public safety by enabling law enforcement to identify vehicles involved in criminal activities.
The Commissioner highlighted that the initiative aligns with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, which prioritizes Modernization, Opportunity, Reforms, and Efficiency in governance.
Awareness Campaigns Underway
To ensure smooth implementation, the Directorate of Transport has commenced public awareness campaigns through radio jingles and other official communication channels. Citizens are encouraged to familiarize themselves with how the platform works by visiting the official website www.platedetect.com or contacting the support lines provided.
Call to Action
Mr. Agofure urged all vehicle owners and operators in Delta State to embrace the new system, emphasizing its role in creating a “safer, smarter, and more secure Delta State.”
“This innovation is not just about enforcement—it is about using technology to work for the people,” he said. “Together, let us build a Delta State where innovation drives progress and safety is a shared responsibility.”
