The Delta State Government has issued a strong warning against the indiscriminate disposal of litter along streets and highways, emphasizing the need to maintain a clean and aesthetically pleasing environment.
The warning, delivered through a public announcement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Jamani Tommy Ejiro, was made available to Emerald News on Tuesday.
In the announcement, Mr. Jamani highlighted the state’s commitment to addressing this environmental issue and stressed that tricycle operators and passengers must prioritize cleanliness at all times.
He noted that it is unlawful for anyone, including passengers in tricycles, to dispose of litter or other materials along highways.
To prevent such activities, the commissioner recommended that tricycle operators procure waste baskets from ministry consultants and the Commercial Motorcycles and Tricycle Operators Association (COMOTOA) to ensure proper disposal of waste from their vehicles.
He added that violators of these rules would be fined and prosecuted in accordance with existing regulations.
In a related development, the Delta State Environmental Protection Agency (DELSEPA) has approved the collection of gaseous emission charges as part of its effort to mitigate pollution from motorcycles and tricycles.
Mr. Jamani Tommy Ejiro further stated that motorcycle and tricycle operators must comply by acquiring emission stickers from the ministry consultant, COMOTOA.
He warned that failure to adhere to this directive could result in fines and possible legal action.
The state government remains committed to safeguarding the environment and urges all residents, particularly transportation operators, to follow these new guidelines to ensure a cleaner and healthier Delta State.
